私は高校生の時、自動車整備士になることを夢みて、自動車工業の短大に進み、整備士の資格を取って、日本で１８年近く整備士として働いてきましたが、数年前、乳がんが発覚し手術を受け、死と直面して、今まで自分のために、自分のやりたいことをしてきた人生でしたが、今後は生きている間に今までの自分の経験や知識をもっと人のために活かし、時間を使うべきではないだろうか。そんなことを考えて過ごしていた時、テレビ番組で独立してまだ１０年の東ティモールのことを知りました。
まだ近い過去にインドネシアに占領され、多くの人が殺されて現在の平均年齢が１７歳の国。今でも東ティモールでは整備士の学校が無く、教えてくれる人もいない中、皆、自動車のことを知らずに整備をしているということを知り、多くのトレーニングを受けてきた私は、生まれた国が違うというだけでこんなにも環境が違うことにショックを受けました。今まで自分が教わってきたことをどうしてもこの国の人たちにも伝えたくて、東ティモールにやって来ました。

私のクラスの生徒は１９歳から３１歳で、皆、素直で熱心でとてもかわいいです。朝から夕方まで授業をしていますが、多くの生徒はあまりお昼ご飯をたべません。
“お昼ご飯食べないの？”と聞くと、“午後の授業中に眠くなって授業が頭に入らなくなるといけないから食べない”と言いますが、本当はお昼ご飯を買うお金がないのです。時々お弁当を買って教室で食べる生徒もいますが、私が教室で午後の準備をしていると、必ず生徒は笑顔で“先生も食べる？”と言って私に声をかけてくれます。５０セント（４０円くらい）のわずかなご飯を惜しげもなく分けてくれようとする生徒達の優しさに心を打たれます。ほとんどの生徒は車を持つどころか車の免許さえ取るお金がありません。もしかすると一生、車を買うことができないかもしれない。それでも整備士になりたい、勉強して自分の未来を変えたいと一生懸命勉強しています。
自動車のしくみはとても複雑なので、車を運転したこともない人がしくみを理解するのはとても大変なことだと思いますが、生徒達は毎日、頭を悩ませながら考えています。理解ができないと元気がなくなりますが、理解できると笑顔で“わかった！”と言ってとたんに元気になります。そんな笑顔を見るたびにこの国にきてよかったー！と感じます。そして、どうしたら生徒達に理解してもらえる授業にできるか私も毎日生徒達と一緒に頭を悩ませています。この国に来て、今まで日本では考えなかったことをいろいろと考えさせられます。贅沢な食事が出来る事、教育を受けられること、教えてくれる人がたくさんいるのが当たり前の日本、私はこの国に来て、そのありがたさを教えられました。生徒たちに明るい未来が来るように、今自分にできることを精一杯し、そして生徒と共に学び、成長していきたいと思っています。

I want to study and grow with students

 

When I was in high school, I dreamed to be automobile mechanic. I went to junior college of automotive industry and took mechanic’s qualification. After working as mechanic for 18 years, I knew I had a breast cancer and got surgery. Until to now, I did what I liked to do. But from now on, I want to use my skill and experience for someone who needs it. While thinking that, I knew Timor which declared its independence just years ago at first in TV program.In the near past, it was occupied by Indonesia and many people killed by. Now average age is just 17 years in the country. And, there is no school for automobile mechanic nor teacher.I came here to teach what I have and know.

 

Age of students in my class is from 19 to 31. Each one of them is an honest and hardworking. The class time is from morning to evening, but many of students do not have lunch at all. When I ask them ‘don`t you have a lunch’, their reply is ‘no, because if we eat, we get sleepy and cannot concentrate on class.’ However, truth is that they do not have enough money to have a lunch. Sometimes, there is someone who has a lunch. When I sit and prepare for evening class, she comes to me and says ‘teacher, would you have it?’ I am struck by the kindness of student trying to share what she has only. Far from having a car, most students have no money to take even a car license. They may never have a car in their lifetime. In spite of that, they study hard to be a mechanic and change the future.

Since mechanism of car is very complicated, I think that it is definitely more difficult for someone who never ride car to understand how car works. But, students in my class are very hardworking and struggling to understand mechanism. When they do not understand what I taught, they get lost. In contrast, when they get it, they make smile in their face and say `got it`. Every time I see that moment, I really feel glad I came to this country. Also, I am bothering how to make class more interesting and they get it easily. After coming here, it made me to think many things which I never thought in my country such as it is natural that I have a luxury meal, to get good education and there are many people who can teach me a lot. I was really thought a kindness. I would like to make effort to with my students to learn and grow more and they have brighter future.
