私は東ティモール陸軍の兵士に自動車整備技術を教えているＪＤＲＡＣの教務・会計係として現地に5ヶ月滞在し、1週間前に帰国しました。一仕事やり終えたという感じです。今回は11名の若い兵士に自動車整備の初級技術を教育しました。もちろん、日本とは、一般の教育体制が異なりますから、理論的な教育（特に数学関連）は少々苦手のようでした。実物を見せて説明すると、皆急に元気が出てきて質問もたくさん出ました。閉講式では皆「もっと授業を受けたい」「いつ戻ってくるのか」と、教官たちとの別れと授業の終了を非常に惜しんでいました。
他の国々もそうですが、東ティモールにも独特の時間の流れがあります。日本のようにシステマティックに物事は動きませんが、キチンと話をすれば理解してくれますし、ときにはとても融通を利かしてくれます。教育を手伝ってくれたローカルスタップも、友達になった大学生も、「外国からの支援も産出している石油もいつまでも続くわけじゃない」「東ティモールは若い国だ」「僕たちが国を、産業を作っていかなければならない」というような話をしてました。
今、日本人の立場から見ればゆっくりとした歩みでも、東ティモールは確実に進化していますし、若年人口の増加率を見ればその進化が加速するのは当然の流れです。この進化がこの国の人々にとって良きものになるよう、僅かながら力を尽くしたいと思います。

At the speed of Timor

I worked as accountant for JDRAC which trains automobile maintenance skills to army soldiers in Timor for 5 months, and came back one week ago. This time, we trained 11 young soldiers to intermediary skill for automobile maintenance. Of course, there is difference in education between Japan and Timor, I felt they lacked the skill of logical thinking. In the farewell ceremony, every student said `we wanted to take more lessons’ ‘when will you come back’ and　regretted separation with teachers.

Every place is same, but East Timor has its own time flow. Things do not go systematically like Japan, but they understand what we try to say and be very flexible in a time. Local staff and university student who got familiar with us told us ‘aid from foreign country and petroleum we produce do not last forever’, ‘Timor is young country’ ‘we have to build a country and industry’. From viewpoint of Japanese, it may appear slow and small, but East Timor definitely has making a progress. And looking at the rate of increase in the young population, it is natural that progress will accelerate.
